Power of Social Media in Today's Journalism

  Social media plays a particularly significant role in today's times. It is important to know that in today's times social media has gotten better with time. The power of social media has increased very quickly to a point where people do not read newspaper anymore instead, they love to scroll through Instagram, Facebook, You Tube reels just to get the news which might be false or misleading as well. It is important to know that people nowadays consume Instagram more than they consume newspaper. They feel like the social media platforms content is right and fact checked which might not always be the case. 

Social media platforms such as Instagram, twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, snapchat are platforms where more than 90 percent of kids or youths are consuming the content and getting brain rotted to a point where consuming content gives them peace of mind. Social media addiction has become a new problem in today's world because kids do not know how to balance time and work side by side. Due to this kids and youths even adults are getting addicted to such platforms and wasting their entire day on it. 

Since journalism refers to gathering, collecting, assessing, creating, disseminating news and information through various media platforms. It has the power of sharing news to a global audience and making people aware about what is happening in the world. 

The case of citizen journalism is rising because people are making videos of incidents, mishaps that happen in front of their eyes and post it online. People do not wait for others to talk about the issue and directly post the accident or the mishap using their smartphones. Social media has become too strong because it has the power to influence the audience and make them act in the way the video wants it to be. It is easy to influence or brainwash people in today's times due to false and misleading information traveling via these platforms. People also do not trust media anymore and thus rely on these platforms to get information about the world. Social media has the power to influence opinions. It is like if you show a video of person from a bad perspective then the entire world will take him as a bad person but if you show the same person in a positive limelight then the world will praise him/her. It is that simple to manipulate people by showing pieces of content. Although if used correctly then social media in today's journalism times can become a plus factor for informing people, youth about the current trending issues and factors in today's times. 


Social media is the future of journalism since everything is switching from print to digital. If used wisely, social media has the power to create remarkable positive change for humanity.
